Methinks it's a combination of a REALLY tight girdle/corset, and a strange pose. (Her facial expression is REALLY uncomfortable; you just know that boned undergarment is ready to Pop A La Lee.)
Peggy Lee is a goddess! (I realize that I, and others, have waxed similarly rhapsodic about quite a few Fabulonian females of late: Kylie, Ann-Margret, etc. I don't wish to appear indiscriminate, or take away from their fabulosity through overuse; so, I will refrain from using the "________ is a goddess!" phrase again in the next few days.*
* unless it pertains to Nancy Kwan, Jennifer Jones, Roslyn Kind, Lainie Kazan, Polly Bergen, Anita Page, Dorothy Draper, Gene Tierney, Kay Kendall, Lola Albright, Barbara Parkins, or other similar unquestioned dieties.
On the slimming question, I go for touching-up - there was a time, after all, when the whole point of a solid black dress was to make it easier for the retoucher.
That said, Miss Peg was indeed a foundation-garment mascot (as well as, it goes without saying, a goddess)...
She was pretty slim in her early big band days, but I think she was always in various stages of voluptuousness after that. Her daughter described her in a documentary, created after her death, as "a big Swedish farmgirl."
In a loving and affectionate way, that is, not a Christina Crawford kind of way.

Yes! Recently I have become reacquainted with her "He's a Tramp" from Lady and the Tramp.
It is genius.
Is it just me, or does that second picture seem to be poorly doctored in order to make her appear more svelte?
I mean, black IS slimming. But you might be right.
On second thought. Her face looks thin in that one too. Maybe she took up bulimia for a minute or two. What girl hasn't?
It's an odd picture. She was slim for a while, but more often than not girdled up to the max. Either way, I love her!

If you had added a photo of Miss Piggy would anyone have noticed anything different?
One does sometimes wish that young Fabulonians would show more respect for their goddesses...
